What is OWA?

OWA stands for Outlook Web Access (or as I like to refer to it - Outlook With Attitude) and is our cloud version of Outlook Exchange mail.

What if I lose access to email on my phone/personal device?

This is usually caused by a mail server reboot or a security certificate renewal.  Although both are rare occurrences, they are necessary at times.  Most phones/devices should be able to recover their connectivity to your email account despite issues with the mail server; however in the event this happens, there are cases when this is best resolved by simply removing the account from your device then re-adding it.  Note – this can also be caused by you changing your password; therefore be sure to change the password for the account on your device.

What are the settings for adding my TVSD email account to my phone/device?

All devices are different in how they allow accounts to be added, so here are some common notes that will apply to most devices:

  • Your user name = your network user ID.  Typically your first-initial and last name (ex: jdoe)
  • Some devices may require you to precede your user name with the domain (ex: tvsd\jdoe)
  • Email address = [your user name]@tvsd.org
  • Server name = owa.tvsd.org
  • If given SSL options, select options asking for SSL certificates and/or allowing the use of all or unknown SSL certificates etc.

What if entering my password does nothing to let me in?

Chances are you may have locked up your account or your password has expired.  If your account is locked, simply waiting about 30-minutes will allow for the auto-unlock to occur.  If your account password has expired, please submit a help desk request for a password reset.

Cleaning up your mailbox

All TVSD users are granted 290MB of mailbox space.  To remove unwanted mail or downsize your mailbox here are some helpful tips:

Sort by Size

What counts towards you mailbox quota is the size of the emails, not the number of emails (size, not quantity).  Sort by size and trim off those large emails.  Anything over 900KB is a large email.  Chances are it is due to a large attachment included with the email.  Save the attachment then remove the email.

Clear out Sent Items

The 'Sent Items' folder is a storage for every single email you send.  This means that if you sent out an email with an attachment, it stores the attachment and that too counts towards your mailbox quota.  Again, sort by size and remove anything over 900KB.

Sort by Date Received

Once you have removed the heavy hitters, you can also sort by date.  It is usually good practice to hold on to at least 1 school-year's worth of emails in your Sent Items folder as well as your Inbox.  Save anything that you deem to be confidential or irreplaceable in subfolders within your Inbox.

Using subfolders

Anything you deem confidential or irreplaceable can be stored in a subfolder within your inbox.  Keep in mind, though, that items stored there count toward your mailbox quota.  To create a subfolder right-click the Inbox and select "New Folder".  Drag mail into that folder for safe keeping.

Empty the Deleted Items folder

It is generally good practice not to use your Deleted Items folder as a holding area for organizing emails.  Clean this folder out regularly by right-clicking the folder and selecting "Empty Folder".
